POLICE DEPARTMENT

Smoke Free Illinois

Major provisions of a new law that became effective January 1, 2008:

q        Prohibits smoking in public places (including but not limited to bars, restaurants, coffee shops, sandwich stands, hotels, motels), places of employment and governmental vehicles.

q        Requires that “No Smoking” signs be posted in each public place and place of employment where smoking is prohibited.

q        Requires ashtrays to be removed from any area where smoking is prohibited.

q        Prohibits smoking within a minimum distance of 15 feet from entrances, exits, windows that open and ventilation intakes that service an enclosed area where smoking is prohibited.

q        Provides for fines for those violating the law by smoking in prohibited areas of $100.00 to $250.00 and fines for the person who owns, operates or otherwise controls a public place of not less than $250.00 for a first offense.

“Phishing” Scam Warning

“Phishing” is the technique used by criminals to obtain personal, electronic information, such as log-ins and passwords for bank accounts, from unsuspecting persons.  They send out an e-mail that looks like it comes form your bank asking you to respond immediately via e-mail.  The main goal of a phishing e-mail is to direct you to a site where you will provide your personal information.  With these basic, but powerful clues, you can easily recognize the threat and ensure the safety of your identity and finances.  Be safe from phishing.  Keep your personal information secure.  Here are a few things to consider:

q        Does the e-mail ask you to go to a website and verify personal information?  Banks do not ask you to verify your personal information in response to an e-mail.

q        What is the tone of the e-mail? Most phishing e-mails convey a sense of urgency by threatening discounted service or information loss if you don’t take immediate action.

q        What is the quality of the e-mail? Many phishing e-mails have misspellings, bad grammar, or poor punctuation.

q        Are the links in the e-mail valid? Deceptive links in phishing e-mails look like they are to a valid site, but deliver you to a fraudulent one.  Many time you can see if the link is legitimate by just moving your mouse over the link.

q        Is the e-mail personalized with your name and applicable account information? Many phishing e-mails are generic salutations and generic information (i.e. “Dear Customer” or Dear Account Holder”) instead of your name.

q        What is the sender’s e-mail address? Many phishing e-mails come from an e-mail address not from the company represented in the e-mail.

When in doubt, type it out. If you suspect an e-mail to be phishing, don’t click on any links in the e-mail.  Type the valid address directly into your web browser.

Need help installing the Child Safety Seat in your vehicle?  Contact the Lakemoor Police Department and Sgt. Spoerry will be glad to assist you.

At night be sure to secure your vehicle by rolling up all windows and locking all doors. Remove valuables from the car and do not leave then in open view on the seats.  The Police Department has received numerous reports of thefts from unlocked cars parked in driveways over night.  Be sure your garage door is closed at night and when you leave your home.

Here’s a little tip for everyone – Put your car keys beside your bed at night.  If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car.  The alarm will be set off and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.  Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away think of this.  It’s a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation.  Test it.   It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key pad chain.  It works if you park in your driveway or garage.  If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar or rapist won’t stick around.  After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won’t  want that.  Remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot.  The alarm can work the same way there.  This is something that should really be shared with everyone.

Identity Theft

Identity theft happens when someone pretends to be you by using your personal information when applying for loans, credit cards or leases.  The thief takes advantage of your good credit record, leaving behind bad credit in your name.  The loss to consumers and institutions due to identity theft totals millions of dollars each year.  To report ID theft, immediately call the Police Department at 815 385 4111.

Some of the ways a thief gets your personal information:

q        Stealing your purse or wallet

q        Pilfering information such as bank statements from your mail box

q        Posing as your employer, loan officer or landlord to get your credit reports

q        Going through your trash for credit card carbons or loan applications

Watching transactions at ATM machines to capture your PIN

LAKEMOOR LEASH LAW

The Village of Lakemoor has adopted the McHenry Animal Control bylaws.  We have been receiving numerous phone calls about dogs and cats running around  with no leash on them.  It is unlawful for any person to knowingly or recklessly permit any dog or cat to leave the premises of its owner when not under control by leash or other recognized control methods.  The owner of any dog or cat shall not permit such dog or cat to enter upon the premises or property of another person without permission of the owner of such premises or property.  If the animal is running at large, not confined to the owner’s property  and not under restraint shall be capture and impound. So please let’s make our pets safe and be courteous to your neighbors.

May 26th

Let us pause on Memorial Day, to bring those close to our hearts, the memories we hold so dear, of the men and women before us who unselfishly put their dreams and their lives on the line for us.  We must remember, freedom is not cheep.
