MOSQUITO
ABATEMENT
The Village utilizes an integrated approach to mosquito control to reduce nuisance mosquitoes and reduce the potential of mosquito borne disease such as West Nile Virus.  The Village’s mult-istep program emphasizes control of the mosquito larvae in their breeding sites to prevent development.  The program begins with an aerial survey of the Village to map out potential breeding sites – retention ponds, drainage ditches, wetlands or any low areas holding water.  Clarke Mosquito Control’s personnel inspect these identified sites for breeding.  Areas found breeding are treated with a biorational agent, which is based on the ground soil bacterium which only attacks mosquito larvae.  Even with such a comprehensive program the cooperation of homeowners is needed.  As much as 10% of a communities mosquitoes may come from backyard mosquito breeding areas.  Bird baths and children’s pools should have the water changed on a weekly basis.  Gutters, flowerpots and garbage cans should be empties of all water.  Pools should be working properly.  Standing water that will remain for 7 days in your yard should be reported to the “Mosquito Hotline”.  The “Mosquito Hotline” is the citizen response system installed by the Village’s contractor, Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management to report standing water, obtain information regarding the West Nile Virus or be placed on the Call Notification List.  The hotline number is (800) 942-2555.

* Whenever outdoors between dusk and dawn, wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.  Loose-fitting, light colored clothing is best.
*Use mosquito repellent containing 25 to 35 percent DEET when it is necessary to be outdoors, applied sparingly to exposed skin or clothing as indicated on repellent label.  Consult a physician before using repellents on young children.
*Check for and repair any tears in residential screens, including porches and patios,
Eliminate stagnant water in bird baths, ponds, flower pots, wading pools, old tires and any other receptacles in which mosquitoes might breed.
* Keep grass cut short and shrubbery well-trimmed around the house.
*Since dead birds (crows, blue jays and raptors) can be the first warning that West Nile Virus is present in the area, report dead birds on your property to the County Health Department.

PUBLIC WORKS  DEPARTMENT

BUILDING PERMITS are needed for fences, sheds, decks, patios, roofing, porches, driveways and siding.  Check with the building department before starting any project.  Building permits take a minimum of 48 hours to be issued after receipt of application documents.  Application documents include a completed application form, survey, plans and architectural approval.  Having all documents ready when applying for a permit will alleviate processing delays.  SWIMMING POOL regulations are available at the Village Hall.  These controls are intended to provide protection against potential drowning and near-drowning to children under the age of five by restricting pool access.  These regulations apply to all pools, spas and hot tubs over 24 inches deep.
It is expected that when applying for any building
permit that your utility bill is current.
The beach in Morrison park is open.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  There is no lifeguard on duty.  Let’s keep our parks and beach clean.  Please don’t litter.  Trash cleanup uses valuable time that could be spent on other projects.  Animals are prohibited from the parks and beach.  Animal wastes negatively impact beach water samplings.  Skateboarding is not allowed in the parks, especially on picnic tables.  Parents are responsible and liable for damage caused by their children.  Report vandalism of park facilities and Village property to the Police Department or Public Works Department.
Please report streetlight outages and location to the Public Works Department so the appropriate ComEd facility can be contacted.

Village Ordinance considers grass in excess of 8 inches to be a public nuisance.  GET MOWING.
